Origin England 1700’s. Fruit is small to medium. Skin is a golden russet. Stores 3-4 months. Flavor is rich & strong. Ripens in September/October. Good for eating fresh, cider & sauce. Crisp yellowish flesh is tinged green and sugary, juicy, and aromatic with an acidic sweet flavor. Because of the high acid content, storage for weeks or months mellows the fruit for dessert use. This is a good cider apple and good for winter storage. Keeps well in cold storage, apple pie and cider. Zones 3-6
MaClay Gravenstein (new)
Good dessert apple. Vigorous tree yields a crop of medium fruit with red-over-green skin and creamy yellow flesh at maturity. Remarkable flavor when eaten fresh. Holds its shape when baked & makes excellent sauces. Antique variety, originates from Denmark, circa 1797. Cold - hardy. Ripens in September. Requires another apple for cross pollination. Zones 4-8
